Process
in the AC Program
Contact INformation
The AC classrooms consider three areas pertaining to curriculum and instruction: Content, Product, and Process. The processes used in delivery of instruction in the AC classrooms vary, but are mostly focused on expanding thinking skills through the use of Bloom’s Taxonomy (focus being on the upper levels: analysis, synthesis, and evaluation) as well as levels 3-4 of the Depth of Knowledge Levels (Strategic Thinking and Extended Thinking). This process includes going beyond ‘fill in the blank’ questions and allowing students to grapple with conflicting ideas and strategies while creating safe discourse groups. We incorporate current events, logic, and open ended projects frequently as students develop study habits, research and note taking skills, and strategies for learning and organization.Watch the video to find out what this looks like in a self-contained HA classroom setting.

Every high ability teacher works to adress individual strengths and challenges. The curriculum used in the self contained AC classes is usually above grade level. Expect English/ Language Arts instruction to focus on skills and standards that are as much as two years above grade level. Math instruction is compacted in Grade 4 - covering 4th and 5th grade level standards. Both Grade 5 and Grade 6 students will use curriculum designed one year above grade level. Enrichment options will be provided as needed.

In the AC program, students will create a variety of in-depth products whether it be a play, an essay, a model, etc. A few examples of the products created are long-term science projects, poetry notebooks, research papers and projects, novel study projects, and literature study guides. In addition to those, we also have the students participate in Drama Days, where each school performs three student-led plays in the fall of each year - a huge fan-favorite! Please watch the video for more information.

Social-Emotional
in the AC Program
Contact INformation
In addition to the AC program meeting our high ability students' cognitive needs, it meets their social-emotional needs as well. High ability students often gravitate toward older children or adults, but within the AC program, our students thrive in an environment where they are surrounded by like-minded peers who often experience many of the same intensities and emotions as they do. The AC teachers both understand and appreciate these unique traits and work to create a supportive, nurturing atmosphere where it is okay to not have all the answers and where mistakes are seen as opportunities to grow. Watch the video to hear more!

Homework
in the AC Program
Contact INformation
The Academic Challenge teachers are intentional about making homework relevant, manageable, and meaningful. We support the transition into the program, teaching time management, organization, study skills and collaboration. As students continue to grow through the three years, they learn to manage and embrace increasingly rigorous and complex work.

Transportation
in the AC Program
Contact INformation
Students who live in the district will be provided with transportation to either Southside Elementary or Parkside Elementary. This may include a bus transfer at one of the other schools. Please take a moment to print, complete, and submit a transportation request.Bus drivers take special precautions with the younger students in these situations. Visit the route information link below for more information about your child’s specific route. It is recommended that you include the bus route and transfer information and physically give it to your child during the first few days of school. This allows adults to be sure they get them where they need to be without the delay of looking up individual information. We are excited to welcome new students to Parkside and Southside. To make the transition easy, you may want to be sure you have filled out and submitted the following forms to the proper elementary school’s office staff before the end of the year.
