Manifest Destiny, a phrase coined in 1845, is the idea that the United States is destined—by God, its advocates believed—to expand its dominion and spread democracy and capitalism across the entire North American continent. The philosophy drove 19th-century U.S. territorial expansion and was used to justify the forced removal of Native Americans and other groups from their homes. John L. O’Sullivan, the editor of a magazine was supposed to have invented the term in an essay in which he advocated annexing Texas and accused European powers to interfere in the politics of the USA.

In 1838 and 1839, President Andrew Jackson decided to remove Native Americans from their land to leave room to settlers and sometimes to speculators who made large profits. At the beginning, tribes resisted but finally federal troops were sent and Native Americans were forced to leave their land. Most of the removals were awful: families were separated, many people died of hunger and ill-treatment. Ten of thousands of Native Americans were forced away from their home and this remains a sad memory for Indian tribes still nowadays.

In 1862, the Pacific Railroad Act chartered two railroad companies to build a transcontinental railroad that would link the USA from east to west. There was a competition between the two companies so that although the labor was hard because of the many dangers arising in the construction, the railroad was finished in 1869.It had a big impact on the west as it became 'nearer' to the east and people rushed to participate in the Gold Rush.

The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) was a gold rush that began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The news of gold brought approximately 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad. There was a rapid influx of fortune seekers in California that began after gold was found at Sutter’s Mill in early 1848 and reached its peak in 1852. According to estimates, more than 300,000 people came to the territory during the Gold Rush. More info on Wikipedia

In 1801, just after the Louisiana Purchase, President Jefferson decided to send two explorers called Lewis and Clark to go on an expedition to explore a huge stetch of land from east to west and north to south. The expedition lasted more than two years and both men mapped uncharted land, rivers and mountains. They wrote a journal filled with many details about unknown territory. After this expedition, the westward expansion started.
