Earth Day

LET'S TALK ABOUT...

Earth Day continued to grow, and became a global event in 1990 when 200 million people in 141 countries participated. By the year 2000, Earth Day involved 184 countries and around 5,000 environmental groups. Today, more than 1 billion people throughout the world participate in Earth Day. Image of a melting glacier

The first Earth Day was held in 1970, and was proposed by a senator at the time, Senator Nelson of Wisconsin. After seeing a large oil spill in 1969, Senator Nelson was inspired to organize a day to teach about the environment. Nelson and his team were able to rally 20 million people in the United States to celebrate Earth Day in 1970. Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 for founding Earth Day.
