Born: 1412 in Domremy, France Died: May 30, 1431 in Rouen, France Famous for: Leading the French army against the English in the Hundred Years War Nickname: The Maid of Orleans

Early life

Joan of Arc grew up in Domremy, a small town in France. She was the daughter of a farmer and helped out on the farm. Joan was also very religious. At the age of twelve or so, she had a vision from God telling her to lead the French Army against the English Army. When Joan turned sixteen she decided it was time to listen to her visions and set out on her incredible journey.

NEXT

The context

France had long been torn apart by a bitter conflict with England, known as the Hundred Years' War. England had gained the upper hand on France and disinherited the French crown prince, Charles of Valois. The English occupied much of northern France and Henry V and his son Henry VI ruled both England and France.

NEXT

Convincing Charles of Valois

Though just a very young farm girl, Joan decided to ask Charles of Valois for an army so she could defeat the English. In 1429, she went to Chinon through enemy territory! She wasn't taken seriously at first but Joan persevered and soon convinced Charles against the advice of most of his counselors and generals. Joan promised him she would see him crowned King in Reims.

NEXT

Becoming a leader

When Charles finally agreed to let Joan fulfil her destiny, he sent her to the city of Orleans with a convoy of soldiers and supplies. Orleans was under siege from the English Army. She had practised for battle and become an excellent fighter and an expert horse rider. She cut her hair and dressed like a man.

NEXT

The Siege of Orleans

The French people in Orleans had heard of Joan's visions from God. They hoped that God was going to save them from the English and welcomed her. When she felt her army was ready, Joan launched an attack against the English. She was wounded by an arrow yet didn't stop fighting alongside her army. Together they eventually defeated the English troops and caused them to retreat from Orleans in May 1429. She was victorious!

NEXT

Achieving her goal

Moving on from her victory in Orleans, Joan had set out to complete her mission given from God. She also had to lead Charles to the city of Reims to be crowned king. Joan gained many supporters on her way to Reims where Charles was eventually crowned King of France.

NEXT

Joan's downfall

in May 1430, Joan went on fighting with a small army to protect the city of Compiegne from the Burgundians (French collaborators and English allies). She was thrown of her horse outside the town's gates. She was captured then sold to the English. The English held Joan prisoner and accused her of witchcraft and heresy and after a year in captivity they decided that dressing as a man was enough to prove her guilty.

NEXT

Joan's death

Joan was only nineteen years old when she died. King Charles did not intervene to save her from death. She was burned alive at the stake in the city of Rouen! True to her faith, she asked for a cross before she died and an English soldier gave her a small wooden cross. Witnesses said she also forgave her accusers and asked them to pray for her. Years later she will be proven NOT guilty and made a Saint.
