For example the biocapacity per person is calculated by how many hectares of productive area there is in a city, a country, or the world, how productive each hectare is, and how many people share this area.

The Ecological Footprint can be calculated for a single individual, a city, a country or the entire planet and compare to its biocapacity.

Both the Ecological Footprint and biocapacity are expressed in global hectares.
