Ecological footprintvsBiocapacity

Ecological footprint…

…is the impact of human activities measured in terms of the area of biologically productive land and water required to produce the goods consumed and to assimilate the wastes generated (WWF)

More simply, it is the amount of the environment necessary to produce the goods and services necessary to support a particular lifestyle (WWF)

… represents the biologically productive land and sea area, including forest lands, grazing lands, cropland, fishing grounds, and built-up land (WWF)

For example the biocapacity per person is calculated by how many hectares of productive area there is in a city, a country, or the world, how productive each hectare is, and how many people share this area.

Both the Ecological Footprint and biocapacity are expressed in global hectares.

The Ecological Footprint can be calculated for a single individual, a city, a country or the entire planet and compare to its biocapacity.

Today many countries are use more natural resources (Ecological Footprint) than their ecosystems can regenerate (biocapacity).

So, how many Earths would we need if the world's population lived like...

So, how many earths do you consume?

Would you like to find out which of us which of us consumes more or less?
