Thanksgiving is an annual feast to honor the first Thanksgiving in America that took place in the year 1621, when the colonists of Plymouth, Massachusetts shared a meal with the Wampanoag Indians, who were native to the land.
The Pilgrims were a group of English Puritans who wanted to break away from the Church of England and start a new life.
Those colonist were later known as the Pilgrims.
Sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from England aboard the Mayflower, the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620, in what is now known as Massachusetts.

A few years earlier, disease had wiped out much of the native population.
When the Pilgrims reached Cape Cod, they were unprepared for the winter. That first winter was harsh and devastating. Half of the Pilgrim colony died, unable to survive in the "New World."
In March of 1621 an agreement was made between the colonists and
the native people to protect one another. The Wampanoag Indians and particularly an English-speaking tribe member named Squanto, were helpful in teaching the Pilgrims how to survive. Squanto taught them everything from using fish as a fertilizer for crops to

building stronger homes. He also translated and helped build relationships
between the two groups. The Pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribe sat down that year for the first Thanksgiving. It was likely just a routine to celebrate the harvest. Native Americans actually celebrated “Thanksgiving”
even before theEuropeans arrived to America.
Although several U. S. Presidents pushed for Thanksgiving to be a National holiday, it was Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, who made it a reality. Her 40-year campaign of writing editorials and letters in support of a National Thanksgiving Holiday finally paid off in 1863 when

President Abraham Lincoln declared it a National Holiday.
In Canada, Thanksgiving was also declared a national holiday by the Canadian Parliament in 1879, but originally the day had an entirely different meaning.Although it is also a celebration based on Europeans
traveling to the New World, it actually began as a day to celebrate the recovery of the Prince of Wales (later king Edward VII) from a serious illness. The holiday’s meaning has changed over the years, and now it is very similar to that of the United States - a day to come together with family and celebrate one’s many blessings.
