8 months SHui Project Monitoring

Project Meetings Fuzhou Abril 2019 From April 1st to 5th, the SHui project held its first official conference in Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University, Fuzhou, China after gaining sponsorship from the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), complementing existing European Union funding. Apart from the official business of the project, during which Chinese and European Work Package Leaders presented their vision for the upcoming work, many delegates attended a workshop on Crop Growth and Hydrological modelling on April 4th, along with a “recess visit” to the nearby Jinshan Soil and Water Conservation demonstration park of the Fuzhou school. Next General Assembly will be in Viena (Austria) in September 9th-13th 2019.

Private Part Website During these months SHui private part website have been added. An on-line proforma is available for uploading the Training and Dissemination activities. Open Access publications can be linked by this option. Partners are encouraged to send all activities related to SHui. https://www.shui-eu.org/

Cropping Systems Cropping systems to deal with:

  • Both continents: Cereal-based crop rotations and Irrigated or rainfed tree crop production.
  • China: Irrigated herbaceous horticultural production and rice.
SHui covers key crops and tree systems in water-saving technologies. This network will be the basis of an open-data platform for sharing long-term data on crop development, crop yield, soil properties/quality, water quality and climate.

Some incoming actions

  • Work among WP2 coordinating teams to enhance integration between crop and hydrological models. Also in WP2 working workshop among teams generating hydrological data in experimental catchment to perform cooperative research on experimental and modelling issues, expected in summer 2019.
  • For WP3, a new PhD student has joined the team at KU Leuven. Aquacrop source code and input are currently being prepared for use on the Vlaams Computer Center (VSC) high performance cluster in order to run large-scale data assimilation simulations. Preliminary analyses with Sentinel-1 data have been conducted.
The next General Assembly is dated for September 9th -13th in Viena (Austria).
