Josephine Cochrane and the Dishwasher

In the 1880s, American inventor Josephine Cochrane wanted an easier way to wash dishes. At that time, washing dishes by hand took a long time and many people broke expensive plates.

+ info

She built a prototype of a new machine that could wash dishes more safely. Before building it, she drew a detailed blueprint to plan every part of her invention.

+ info

Later, she received a patent, and her dishwasher became popular in hotels and restaurants. Today, modern dishwashers are used in homes all around the world.

The Vacuum Cleaner

GROUP 2:

Before vacuum cleaners, people cleaned carpets with brushes. Modern machines use suction to pull dust and dirt from the floor.

+ info

Inside the machine, a filter helps stop tiny dust particles from returning to the air. This keeps homes cleaner and healthier.

+ info

Today, vacuum cleaners are common household appliances. Many modern models also include a powerful canister to collect dirt while cleaning.

GROUP 3:

The Garbage Disposal

Many American kitchens have a garbage disposal under the sink. After people wash the dishes, small pieces of food travel through a pipe into the machine instead of staying in the sink.

+ info

Inside the garbage disposal, a powerful grinder crushes the food into tiny pieces. This helps stop food from blocking the sink and makes cleaning the kitchen easier after meals.

+ info

Good drainage allows water and small food scraps to flow away safely. A well-designed plumbing system carries clean water into the house and dirty water out again, helping families keep their kitchens clean.

GROUP 4:

Modern Washing Machines

Modern washing machines have changed housework around the world. Inside many machines, an agitator moves the clothes through the water to help remove dirt and stains more effectively.

+ info

During the rinse stage, clean water removes the soap from the clothes. After that, the spin cycle turns very quickly to remove most of the water before the clothes are hung up or dried.

+ info

Today's washing machines include different settings for cotton, wool or delicate clothes. Many modern models are also designed to use less water and energy, helping families save resources while keeping their clothes clean.
