Sketch It!
What’s your favourite book? Sketch out the front cover of the book, without the title. Don’t spend long – a quick sketch will do!
Now, show your sketch to your partner. Can they guess the title of your book? If not, can they guess anything else about it?
Judging a Book by Its Cover

Blurb: a short description found on the back cover of a book
They say you can’t judge a book by its cover… but is that always the case? Publishers spend thousands of pounds to make sure that book covers are eye-catching and convey to the reader what they are about.
Look at the cover of Skellig. What do you notice about:
the picture used on the front of
the book;
any quotations that are included on the cover;
the blurb on the back of the book.
Discuss your findings with your partner.
Make a Prediction
Based on what you’ve discussed, can you make some predictions about what the novel, Skellig, will be about? Use the questions inside the crystal ball to help you make your predictions.

Genre: a type or category, e.g. romance, thriller.
