Definition

The faying surface sealant is placed between two elements to be assembled.

Faying Surface Sealing

BE Requirements Visual inspection of faying surface seals. Presence of a squeeze-out or sealant bead on the faying plane. Comply with the required sealant thicknesses. (refer to documentation for values to be met).

Application

Abrade then degrease the surface where the sealant will be applied. Using a spatula or roller, apply a very thin layer of sealant between two material surfaces — identical or not — to be assembled.

Application

Clamp according to the rules to achieve uniform squeeze-out. Assembly (2 options, depending on the process sheet):

  • Installation of fasteners on wet sealant.
  • Installation of fasteners on cured sealant.

Fastener Installation on Wet Sealant

All fasteners must be installed within the sealant application time. For further details, refer to the course "Fastener Installation on Uncured Interlay Sealant".

Fastener Installation on Cured Sealant

Comply with the clamping rate specified in the process sheet. As a general rule, it is:

  • 100% on thin parts or parts to be riveted with solid rivets,
  • 50% on thick parts.
Wait for full cure before installing fasteners.
