Bead Seal Definition
A fillet bead seal consists of applying a high-viscosity sealant along the edge of a structural assembly to ensure sealing.
Bead seal dimensions depend on the aircraft manufacturer. Each aircraft has its own specifications and the applicable standards must be followed. These are referenced in the work card.
Most Common Bead Seal Types
Visual inspection: no voids, bubbles, or irregularities. Uniform colour (no marbling) On thin sheet (≤3mm): the bead thickness must equal the sheet thickness. On thick sheet (>3mm): the bead thickness must be between 3 and 8mm.
Other Bead Seal Types
When assembling with a faying surface sealant, the bead can be applied after smoothing the squeeze-out.
Special requirement with edge overlap: the overlap must equal the sheet thickness.
Application
Surface preparation: Remove any faying surface sealant squeeze-out using a plastic spatula if necessary.
Abrade and degrease the surface using the solvent specified in the work card.
Application
Apply masking tape to define the bead boundaries if necessary. If you have touched the application area with bare hands, degrease the surface again.
Applying a bead seal requires the use of a gun and a nozzle suited to the task. The gun must be held at an angle between 45° et 60°, the choice of nozzle depends on the bead thickness.
Sealant Application
Two methods can be used to apply the bead: First method: The "pull" method with a slow movement to avoid the formation of air bubbles, which can result in a poor-quality bead. The "en poussant" "push" method expels air and produces a good-quality seal. This is the recommended method.

Application
Smooth the seal with a spatula. Smooth any bead joint if present. Remove the masking tape by pulling in a continuous motion away from du joint.
Il faut IMPERATIVEMENT remove the masking tape before the end of the application time.
Tools
Application is carried out with an extrusion gun, then with a smoothing spatula
