Pull-Type Blind Fasteners Installation of Blind Fasteners

Pre-installation Check for Blind Fasteners

Visual inspection of the installation tool Cleanliness and good condition of the nose piece Verify that the nose piece diameter matches the fastener stem diameter. Visual inspection of the fastener Overall condition of the fastener. Verify the grip length. Verify that the fastener matches the one specified on the work card.

Manual Installation Tools

Manual plier for nut plate rivet, avdel, pop.

The riveting plier has several nose pieces that adapt to different stem diameters of the fasteners.

To install the nose piece, keep the plier closed so as to compress the inner spring. Screw on the tip and tighten slightly with a wrench.

Manual Plier Installation Procedure

Position the rivet on the parts to be riveted.

Engage the plier onto the rivet stem.

Apply pressure with the plier while firmly pressing against the rivet head to ensure good contact with the part.

Manual Plier Installation Procedure

Several compressions are required for the stem to break.

The tail breaks off. The remainder (the mandrel) may remain locked inside the hollow rivet stem or be removed to prevent it from falling out later. This is referred to as a locked-mandrel or open-end (lost mandrel) fastener.

Installation Tools: Hydro-pneumatic Gun

Protection Prevents the pull stem from being ejected forcefully

Structural Pull-Type Blind Fasteners

Description Structural pull-type blind fasteners consist of 3 components:

  • a body,
  • a frangible pull stem,
  • a locking collar.

Installation Procedure: NAS 1921 Example

The bulb is formed, the locking collar is swaged into the groove. The pull stem breaks off. Rivet installation is complete.

Insertion of the rivet into the hole

The installation tool head is slid onto the rivet stem. The installation tool is actuated by applying firm and steady pressure to keep the rivet head in place. The rivet expands inside the hole. Slight engagement of the locking collar.
