An orrery is a moving model of the motions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun. Orreries can be used to demonstrate phenomena such as day and night, the seasons, lunar phases, and eclipses. A candle may be placed in the centre to represent the light of the Sun. Larger orreries often include additional planets and their accompanying satellites.

The Whipple Museum takes its name from Robert Stewart Whipple (1871-1953) who presented his collection of 1000 scientific instruments, and a similar number of rare books, to the University in 1944.

The astrolabe was a key astronomical instrument during the Middle Ages. It can be used to tell the time, measure the heights of stars and buildings, and for many other calculations and observations. It works because it is a 2-dimensional representation of the 3-dimensional Universe as understood by the medieval astronomer - with the Earth at the centre of the apparent motion of the Sun.

Frogs are often used by scientists as 'model organisms': like mice and fruit flies they are a specific type of animal that is widely studied to provide insight into more general biological processes.
In the late 18th century, frogs were the talk of the Italian scientific establishment. Two prominent experimentalists, Luigi Galvani and Alessandro Volta, presented novel theories of animal and chemical electricity that they attempted to defend by reference to scientific instruments. At issue was the nature of nervous response and muscular motion in the frog.

Dr. William A. R. Dillon Weston, a fungus expert at the University of Cambridge, demonstrated the structures of extremely small fungi using his own hand-made glass models. His models show fungi that cause diseases in plants, including the potato blight fungus and moulds found on bread and vegetables.

The Whipple Museum is partially housed in a large hall with Jacobean hammer-beam roof-trusses, built in 1618 as the first Cambridge Free School. The Main Gallery of the Museum is the original hall of the Perse School, founded as a bequest by Stephen Perse, a fellow of Caius College.
In 1890 the school moved to new premises and the old building was sold to the University of Cambridge.
The Department of History of Science acquired the Perse Room in 1956 to house the Whipple Collection.
