Installing a thread insert
Introduction
The thread insert or HELICOIL® is used either as a repair to replace a damaged tapping, or during manufacturing in light alloys to prevent rapid thread deterioration. They exist with and without a drive tang.
Description
A tang drives the insert in rotation during installation. It is then broken off. This break-off is facilitated by a breakaway notch.
Warning: during installation, do not turn too fast or jerkily, as this risks breaking the tang prematurely.

Tools
The tap is specially designed to cut the thread for installing the thread insert. It is used like a standard hand tap.
The installation tool is used to fit the insert into the prepared tapping. Various installation tools exist. Let us look at the most commonly used one.

Procedure
Drill to the diameter corresponding to the thread insert to be installed. Pay attention to hole perpendicularity. Apply a 90° to 120° countersink to facilitate insert entry. This countersink should be approximately half a pitch in depth. Place your tap in the tap wrench. Perform the tapping. Pay attention to perpendicularity.
Procedure
Position the insert in the tool aperture by placing the drive tang in the rod notch. Operate the handle until the insert reaches the tool limit. Apply a product during installation to prevent galvanic corrosion.
Procedure
Position over the prepared hole and operate the handle until the insert is correctly positioned in the hole.
Break off the tang using the break-off tool. Retrieve it.
