CHALLENGE

  • When a chemical reaction occurs, new substances are formed. But what happens to the total amount of matter? Does it increase, decrease, or stay the same?
  • Today, you will not be given a step-by-step recipe. Instead, your team must use the provided materials to design an experiment that answers this specific question:
  • Does the total mass of a system change when a gas-producing reaction takes place?

MATERIALS

PROCEDURE: SCIENTIFIC METHOD

  1. Mix sodium bicarbonate and vinegar and observe what happens.
  2. Look at the balloon and the flask. Brainstorm with your team how you can use these two items to trap everything inside the system before, during, and after the reaction. Sketch or write your proposed method below.
