Decree of invariant mass
CHALLENGE
- When a chemical reaction occurs, new substances are formed. But what happens to the total amount of matter? Does it increase, decrease, or stay the same?
- Today, you will not be given a step-by-step recipe. Instead, your team must use the provided materials to design an experiment that answers this specific question:
- Does the total mass of a system change when a gas-producing reaction takes place?
MATERIALS
PROCEDURE: SCIENTIFIC METHOD
- Mix sodium bicarbonate and vinegar and observe what happens.
- Look at the balloon and the flask. Brainstorm with your team how you can use these two items to trap everything inside the system before, during, and after the reaction. Sketch or write your proposed method below.
PROCEDURE: SCIENTIFIC METHOD
3. Prediction: When the reaction finishes and the balloon inflates, the total mass on the scale will ______________ because_____________________________________________
PROCEDURE: SCIENTIFIC METHOD
- PART 3. Experimentation. Recording data.
4. Complete
PROCEDURE: SCIENTIFIC METHOD
- Did the mass change? Did your actual result match your hypothesis?
- What were the error sources? Is the accuracy of the scale important? Why?
Lab report- The law of conservation of mass
- Objective: Draw conclusions based on your observations from the previous three experiments to explain whether the mass is conserved in a chemical reaction.
- Research: Write the chemical reaction between sodium bicarbonate and vinegar and balance it. Identify the source of the bubbles.
- Report: Include all the steps of the scientific method in your report.
