Module 1: Better Appraisals

Supporting employees effectively involves balancing expectations with empathy. Workplace pressures, competing priorities, and uncertainty around mental health can make it challenging for managers to confidently support someone returning after absence. Returning to work after ill health, particularly for mental health reasons, is not always straightforward. Research shows that how managers communicate, plan, and offer flexibility can significantly influence outcomes.

The HR administrator uses the data from the Return to Work to update the sickness absense sheet. This document is reviewed by managers, EXEC and HR. Data is pulled together for the whole organisation.

Foundation visits – We offer the college an annual talk for foundation students. The foundation course at Canterbury College is an academic course for students aged 16 plus who have missed significant parts of their education due to care, ill health, and disability reasons. The course members are typically from socially and economically deprived families and 90% are entitled to free school meals. To help the students gain exposure to a variety of workplaces and jobs the participants take part in a range of activities based on how ready they are to getting into work. The Marlowe has received participants for shadow shifts, attend talks, tours, shows and close looks at various jobs for up to 30 students at a time (Round Robin style). Careers Fairs – Through career fairs the Marlowe can reach many students and job hunters and provide awareness of what the Marlowe does, the type and nature of work and jobs and support on how to get a job in our sector or another. Attendance at careers fairs can also help the Marlowe benchmark its offer against other significant local employers.

Induction & feedback: A clear start, plus structured feedback at the end. Basic training: Essential safety and role-specific training.
