Edge Distance

Definition

The term edge distance refers to the distance between the centre of a hole and the edge of the part. NOTE: formerly "section" and at Airbus "trusquinage".

Edge Distance Values

Each aircraft manufacturer has defined coefficients or values based on the fastener type, diameter, and assembly type. It depends on the type of loads applied to the assembled parts and the type of assembly.

If this distance is too small, there is a risk of premature fatigue failure of the assembly.

The general value is between 2 and 2.5 × the fastener diameter.

The edge distance can also be the distance between a flange (rib, upstand, etc.) and the fastener centreline. In this case it is also referred to as the edge-to-fastener distance.

Edge Distance on Chamfered Parts

The distance between the chamfer and the hole centreline is generally 1.5 × the diameter.
