Pneumatic Drills – Straight and Pistol

Introduction

The most widely used drills in aircraft manufacturing are straight and pistol drills. In this lesson we will look at both types and their use.

Drills

Straight Drill Mainly used for drilling operations on a workbench or on flat surfaces

Pistol Drill Mainly used for drilling operations facing oneself or on vertical surfaces

Use – General

All tools must be held so that they cannot move during work phases, and the position must be safe and sustainable. The working hand must hold the tool firmly as a natural extension of the arm. The guide hand must provide firm support on the part or element to accompany the movement and prevent any slipping.

Use – Straight Drill

The guide hand (left) rests on the structure and supports the drill. The working hand is aligned with the drill axis. All elements (hands, drill, structure) act as one.
