Reamers
Introduction
For the installation of certain fasteners, the precision and surface finish achieved by drilling alone are not sufficient. A finishing operation called reaming. Reaming consists of carefully machining the inner surface of a hole to achieve two objectives:
- Calibrating dimensional precision in accordance with applicable standards.
- Improving the surface finish.
A reamer.
Description
Unlike the drill bit which removes metal at its tip, the reamer has perfectly sharpened longitudinal flutes that remove metal by slightly enlarging the hole as the tool advances. Most often made of cast steel and sometimes high-speed steel, it is always hardened and ground. Like the drill bit, it consists of a body (working part) and a shank (mounting part). There are two main types:
- The hand reamers
- The machine reamers
Hand Reamers
Paris-style Reamer It is only cut along 2/3 of its circumference (2); the remaining third is smooth and forms the back (1). This back promotes tool guidance. This reamer is suited for reaming holes in parts of medium or low thickness. It is mounted on a tap wrench.
Hand Reamers
American-style Reamer It is cut along its entire length. Its staggered teeth reduce vibrations, which is why the reamed hole will be perfectly concentric and scratch-free.
Hand Reamers
Adjustable It consists of a hollow body split along its central length; a central adjustable screw spindle at the end deforms the elastic walls of the tool, providing a very slight increase in diameter. Designed to adjust the reaming tolerance to the nominal size of the reamer or to compensate for wear, this reamer can only machine small amounts of stock in smooth holes.
Machine Reamers
Machine reamers can have a straight or taper shank (Morse taper), and their flutes can be straight or helical.
Wing-type Reamers
These are the reamers most commonly used with pneumatic drills. Their flutes are helical, the entry is slightly tapered, and the tip is often pointed.
