Promoters

Spread the word across campus and to our alumni: Don't face cancer alone

  • Have a dedicated marketing and communications role for an ambassador.
  • Work with LJMU Alumni Relations.

Don't face cancer alone.

  • It's okay to talk about it.
  • Cancer Cafés, four per year, open to all, including alumni
  • Training for line managers (started March 2026)
  • Building awareness across our campuses (find us under Staff and Student pages)

Our two current student ambassadors will graduate soon

Outreach to students to recruit more ambassadors.

  • How do we know that we have been effective and achieved the outcomes that we stated?
  • What feedback or data do we have to inform our strategies (or revise our strategies)?

How are we doing?

Evaluate our activities to learn if we are making a difference and, if so, how.

It's just the beginning

Our activities have a specific audience and underlying purpose: to improve the emotional wellbeing of those in our community affected by cancer.

  • To reduce isolation by building social connections (1-to-1 & group)
  • To contribute to breaking down any perceived stigma associated with talking about cancer

What you are reading: interactivity and animation can make even the most boring content fun. At Genially we use AI (Awesome Interactivity) in all our designs, so you can level up with interactivity and turn your content into something that adds value and engages. Visual content is a universal language, cross-cultural, like music. We are able to understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.

Consider ways we can train different groups in LJMU

  • Personal tutors
  • Additional members of staff beyond line managers

Customise our cancer support kits we send to individuals going through treatment

Thoughtful and created in a bespoke way for each individual.

Training & learning for ambassadors

  • Half day initial training with Cancer Support UK on how to best support someone affected by cancer
  • Ongoing training from related organisations, eg working with cancer, mental health & wellbeing
  • Ongoing support for ambassadors on our Signal group and at cancer cafes
  • Annual Meeting for ambassadors

Strangers

We don't like to bore. We don't want to be repetitive. Communicating in the same way is boring and doesn't captivate. We do it differently. We sabotage boredom. We create what the brain likes to consume because it stimulates it. Pose a dramatic question; it is the essential ingredient to maintain the audience's attention. It is usually posed implicitly at the beginning of the story to intrigue the audience and is resolved at the end.

Take an active role in improving policies that affect staff and students living with cancer

For example:

  • Returning to work / studies
  • Medical leave / Leave of absence
  • Personal circumstances

Project findings: Identifying the issues

  • Lack of awareness and understanding from staff about how to best support someone living with cancer or returning to studies
  • Perceived social stigma associated with having cancer and taboo topic to talk about
  • Experiences of social isolation and loneliness from those with life-limiting illnesses
