The nursing associate is statutorily regulated role in the health and care workforce, designed to bridge the gap between healthcare assistants and registered nurses. It offers a stand-alone career path and a progression route into graduate-level nursing, allowing registered nurses to focus on more complex clinical tasks. Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering evidence-based, person-centred care
- Promoting health and preventing illness
- Supporting individuals to manage their own care
- Collaborating with a wide range of professionals and agencies
The role requires emotional resilience, self-awareness, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Completion of the nursing associate apprenticeship meets the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for registration. Through a range of modules, we support you in your continuing personal and professional development. You experience placements within a variety of settings covering the four fields of nursing, care across the age continuum and care in a variety of settings.

Qualifications and certifications
- Hold level 2 qualifications in English and maths before starting their apprenticeship (or equivalent, e.g. GCSEs Grade C/4 or above)
- Hold the Care Certificate
- Have a satisfactory enhanced DBS disclosure
- Not hold any equivalent, or higher qualification in this subject or a related subject
Interview requirements
- Demonstrate the appropriate values and attitudes for the programme through an interview with the employer and University
Residency & location
- Have lived in the UK for at least the previous 3 years (limited exceptions may apply, such as Government-sponsored or approved schemes)
- Work in England (at least 50% of working time)
Hours of work
- Be contracted to work at least 30 hours per week
Job requirements
- Be currently, or on entry to the course, employed as an apprentice Trainee Nursing Associate

What are the requirements of the placements and what kind of placements would I do?
Placements are dependent on your own experience, skills and requirements of the course. You will be required to complete several placements, which can be done in your own site, other CHG sites and where needed externally. It may be that you need to travel for placements if required. Please be prepared to travel outside your local area if you are unable to secure a placement locally. Each placement is designed that you achieve and implement the practical skills and knowledge, and you evidence this to your practice supervisors and assessor who are responsible for you on placement. How much placement activity is required?
This course has a requirement that you complete 1150 hours over the duration of the course, which 690 are in your own hospital and 460 are external to your base work area – this could be another department in your hospital, another site or external sites. More information can be found on the placement guidance document. Who is responsibility to find placements?
As an apprentice, it is your responsibility to arrange your own placements, so you will need to work proactively with your manager, Practice-Based Educator (PBE) and Corporate Clinical Educator (CCE) to identify and secure placement opportunities in your area.

The length of the course is two-years, predominantly online over Microsoft Teams with 6 blocks of teaching each year. One of these weeks per year is held face to face in Darlington. The total study hours is 2300, which is made up of 1150 hours of theory & academic study (which are through learning completed at university and independent learning), and then 1150 Practice hours. Your practice hours are split into 690 at your own base site, and then external placements make up the remaining 460.

Before you apply:
- You must speak to your manager and Director of Clinical Services before you consider applying to make sure the course and pathway is right for you – it may be that the manager wants to include your Practice-Based Educator and/or Corporate Clinical Educator at this stage.
- You must apply by the deadline set out in the apprenticeship application deadline dates – your manager and executive director must approve this before the or on the deadline outlined. So give yourself plenty time to ensure this process is completed.
