Winds Instruments:

These are instruments that use air to produce music.

• Sound is created by blowing air through the instrument which causes vibration
• Examples: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba

Keyboard Instruments:

These are instruments that are played using keys.

• Sound is created by pressing keys that strike strings or use digital circuitry
• Examples: piano, organ, synthesizer, accordion

String Instruments:

These are instruments that use strings.

• Sound is created by plucking, strumming, or bowing vibrating strings stretched over a resonant body
• Examples: violin, cello, bass, harp, and guitar

Brass:

These are instruments that use air to produce music.

• Sound is created by buzzing lips into a metal mouthpiece, which vibrates inside of the tubing.
• Examples: trumpet, french horn, trombone, tuba

Woodwinds

These are instruments that use air to produce music.

• Sound is created by blowing air across a ledge or using a reed, hence using "wood". Vibration occurs inside the mouthpiece
• Examples: flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone
• Fun Fact: flutes used to be made of wood!

Percussion Instruments:

These are instruments that help maintain rythym.

• Sound is produced by striking, shaking, or scraping the instrument.
• Examples: drums, cymbals, xylophone, tambourine and cowbell.
