Modal Verbs for Deduction and Speculation What are they? We use modal verbs to guess or speculate about situations. Structure:

  • Must + infinitive
  • Might / May / Could + infinitive
  • Can't + infinitive

Past Perfect What is the Past Perfect? We use the Past Perfect to talk about an action that happened before another action in the past. Structure Subject + had + past participle Examples:

  • I had finished my homework before dinner.
  • They had left when we arrived.
