Explanation

Currently, “At European level there is no commonly agreed definition of the term mobbing” (Eurofund -European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions). Based on some concepts from Heinz Leymann, the European Industrial Relations Dictionary and the European Commission as well as the HEART project objectives, we define online mobbing as: “Online mobbing is any repetitive behavior of an aggressive, humiliating, or threatening nature, perpetrated by one or more people toward an individual, through the use of any digital medium, within their work environment or related to their work activities, causing physical, psychological and moral harm to the victims.”

Mission 02

You’ve just entered the company. Standing behind an office door, you begin to hear the marketing team talking.

- Now that Joanne is in the meeting I will publish an anonymous rumor of her in the social media

-That would be great. Last week I posted one saying that she is so slow at work

-ha ha ha. Do you remember the one that made her so angry?

Continue

-Oh yes, that was a good one

This post should have more inpact than that one. What if we say that she has a secret relationship with the boss?

-With the boss is to risky; is better with Mike. Oh she is coming. Post it now before we get caught.

Pay attention to the conversation to get the answers to the questions in the next mission.

Would spreading rumors about a coworker be classified as a form of workplace mobbing?

C No if they are done within colleagues.

B No. Rumors create a fun work environment.

A Yes

Explanation

Continue

According to mobbing expert Professor Heinz Leymann, spreading rumors about a colleague is considered a clear form of mobbing. Leymann identified rumor-spreading as one of the key psychological harassment behaviors that can harm an employee’s social reputation.

Is John suffering from online mobbing?

C Yes

B No. The constant reduction of tasks is not online mobbing

A Not at all

Explanation

Continue

John has been experiencing online mobbing, as he has been gradually excluded from group tasks and social online interactions within his team. This isolation has left him feeling undervalued and disconnected from his colleagues. According to Professor Heinz Leymann, such behavior constitutes an attack on the quality of a person’s occupation and life, as it undermines both professional contribution and personal well-being.

Congratulations! You now have your third secret number to open the briefcase. Write it down and keep exploring.

One of the mobbers has discovered you

As you walk down the aisle, you notice a young employee, called David, sitting at his desk, visibly upset and cryimg. Concerned, you ask what has happened. He explains that for over a year, his boss has been assigning him extra online work to complete at night, weekends and holidays, without any additional pay or time off in return. His boss also sends him several instant messages at no-working hours to be sure that David is doing the tasks. He explains that he really needs the job for supporting his kids, therefore he has not said anything. After investigating, you discover that the boss has been deliberately overloading him with work in an attempt to pressure him into quitting.

Continue

Is David suffering from online mobbing?

A Yes and you encourage to report the situation

C Yes and you encourage to continue accepting tasks

B No because it is work

Explanation

David has been suffering from online mobbing, as he has been overloaded with excessive work designed to push him toward quitting his job without any form of compensation. In addition, the constant work-related messages he receives after office hours can also be considered a form of online mobbing. Organizations must remain vigilant about how supervisors interact with their teams and assign tasks, ensuring that communication and workload distribution are fair, respectful, and compliant with labor standards.

The General Director informs you that a mobbing report has been delivered by Kelly from the Quality Assurance Department against her supervisor, Laura. You are asked to conduct interviews with both parties to better understand the situation.

Continue

During your interview with Kelly, she explains that Laura, her boss, is often rude and constantly calls her attention by email. She feels unfairly targeted and believes her supervisor’s behavior has become personal rather than professional.

Continue

When you speak with Laura, she acknowledges having called Kelly’s attention three times: -once for being caught not working during remote hours. -twice for serious mistakes that resulted in the loss of two high-value production lots. She provides you a copy of the emails and documents that demonstrate Kelly's mistakes and not working attitudes.

Continue

Is Kelly suffering from online mobbing?

C No

B Yes because Laura is her boss

A Yes, of course.

Explanation

Performance management and disciplinary actions, when conducted appropriately and based on objective evidence, are not forms of pshysical and online mobbing. Understanding the difference helps protect the integrity of the organization and the well-being of its employees.

Company Situation

Some employees have been involved in repetitive behaviors of an aggressive, humiliating, or threatening nature, through digital mediums, within their work environment or related to their work activities, causing physical, psychological and moral harm. What is the name of these incidents?

Dear HR Department, I want to report that my supervisor has been taking away more and more of my usual responsibilities without explanation. He often calls me “dummy” in front of others, and lately my colleagues have stopped including me in online meetings, emails and group chats. I feel isolated, humiliated, and unsure of how to respond. I appreciate that you could help me with this situation;I am afraid to be fired. Thanks, John
