Henry R Bowers
Edgar Evans
Robert Falcon Scott
Dr. Edward Adrian Wilson
Lawrence Oates
The only Welsh man in the party. Evans served with the Royal Navy. He had been to Antarctica with Scott in 1901. Known for his strength and resourcefulness.
The only Scottish man in the party. Bowers served in the Royal Indian Marine Service. He was a great organiser and took charge of many parts of the expedition. His nickname was 'Birdie'.
Oates was a British army officer. His role was to look after the ponies that were used during the expedition. His nickname was 'The Soldier'.
Wilson was the chief of the scientific staff. He collected specimens like eggs and investigated and documented Antarctica. His nickname was 'Uncle Bill'.
This was Scott's second expedition. On his first he discovered the Antarctic Plateau, on which the South Pole is located.
The five men arrived on January 17, 1912. Bowers was first to notice the flag left by Amundsen. It was then they realised Amundsen had already beaten them to the pole. Devastated Scott wrote, "Well it is something to have got here, and the wind may be our friend tomorrow." The wind and weather were not kind and on their journey back all five men died.
