U of Kansas: We hold a general orientation that all students must attend plus individual program orientations by program or region. Our biggest pain point is our general orientation session. It’s all important and helpful information, but we’re not sure that the manner of presentation is as engaging or impactful as it could be. How do you best present the info to hundreds of students at a time? So I’d say that we like the content that we share, but are interested in presenting it in a more engaging way. The topics we cover in the general orientation are culture, cultural adjustment and identity abroad, academics abroad, staying healthy abroad (personal health, mental health, resources), personal safety (including sexual assault prevention info), alcohol and drugs and planning for emergencies.

Urban sprawl is the expansion of cities outward into rural areas, resulting in increased car use, longer commutes, and habitat loss. In response to student feedback, we've also started to include more videos and audios with "real people" in some of our more recent modules. For example, for our new "Mental Wellbeing" module, we are currently working with our WorldKind Student Ambassadors to record their stories in either audio recordings (think NPR StoryCorp format) or short video form.

Reflection & Discussion questions

Preparing to go abroad isn't just about getting visas and vaccines. It's also about preparing to learn and reflect on one's journey and also on the world around us.

So, we've added some reflection and discussion questions throughout the course to help students start to think critically and globally even before they go. We encourage facilitators to use them in group discussions or for writing exercises with students.

When a question relates to one of the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), you'll see that goal's icon by the question. Select the icon to learn more about that particular goal and how you may be able to help in furthering that goal.

About this tool and the data used:

1. The hypothetical 1,000 km. journey was simply used as a standard to make equal and easy comparisons. We release that many of the modes being compared aren't likely to be used for such long journeys, but every km. traveled is a choice and makes a difference.2. Transport Emissions: There are various methods to calculate the carbon footprint of modes of transportation, and we've made efforts to gather data that accounts for the entire lifecycle of transportation, often referred to as "wells to wheels." These calculations encompass numerous factors, including production, fuel,* and disposal. * The "fuel" calculations also include the "food fuel" needed for human-powered locomation. While "active transport" modes, such as walking, biking, and wheeling, are often described as "carbon neutral" or "zero emission," the hidden costs of emissions from food production and transport needed to fuel human energy and the production of assistive equipment (e.g., bikes, scooters, wheelchairs, etc.) is increasingly being considered in carbon calculations. 3. Tree Calculations: Sometimes it helps our minds to understand data better when we equate them to something tangible, so we used trees as a quick visual way to compare transport emissions. We employed the following methodology to determine the number of trees required to offset emissions. Trees naturally absorb CO2 from the air, and on average, one tree can absorb about 22 kilograms (or 22,000 grams) of CO2 each year. Therefore, the number of trees you see are how many trees would be needed to soak up the CO2 emitted over the course of one year, helping to reduce its impact on the environment. 4. Date Sources: We acknowledge that data can vary from one source to another, so we made every effort to find reliable, recent, and corroborated information for our calculations. To ensure transparency and enable further exploration, we have included links for each mode where you can access the sources of our information and delve deeper into the topic.

After each AI, students must either certify completion or add it to their Personalized "To-Do" list to progress and receive credit. Your Guide to Safety & Security In this module, travelers are placed in simulated scenarios that address different risk and emergency situations. Your Guide to Visas In this module, travelers will understand the difference between passports and visas, learn about different types of visas, and start the process of checking visa requirements for their destination country. They will also receive tips on travel preparation and navigating borders.

A study by the International Transport Forum (ITF) suggests that carpooling could cut global emissions by up to 11%. Carpooling involves sharing rides with others heading to the same destination at the same time, simplifying coordination efforts. It's important to note that services like Uber, while often categorized as carpooling, are primarily ride-hailing services, where individuals request rides for their own destinations rather than sharing a common route with others and are NOT as eco friendly as carpooling.

Coaches emit almost half of the CO2 emissions that trains do and significantly less than the carbon emitted by cars and airplanes, UK data shows.

While some consider walking is a "zero emission" mode of transport, the CO2 emissions mentioned here come from the production and transportation of food consumed during walking, not from the activity itself. Reflection & Discussion questions

Preparing to go abroad is more than just getting visas and vaccines in order. It's also about starting to reflect on your journey but also on your host country AND the world around you.

So, we've added some reflection and discussion questions throughout the course. Your program leaders may decide to use them in group discussions or for reflection exercises, but they will give you instructions if they do.

When a question relates to one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN), you'll see that goal's icon by the question. Select the icon to learn more about that particular goal and how you may be able to help in furthering that goal.

Action Items

Learn. Apply. Learn. Apply. Any time students learn something new in a module, we want them to apply it right away. When this happens, they'll see the "Your Turn" icon that means that there is an "Action Item" they need to complete to prepare for their travels. The Action Item may be as simple as adding a number to their phones, or it might require some research or maybe scheduling an appointment with a healthcare provider, for example. When hiking or excercising outdoors, there are ways to reduce your carbon footprint.

• Take a bus or shuttle to your hiking destination (over driving yourself, especially if riding solo).
• Regularly maintain and repair your gear to prolong its lifespan, which reduces the need for new product manufacturing.
• Choose lightweight and efficient gear, and pack only the essentials to minimize weight and energy consumption during hikes.

Resource Library and Module Workbooks

The Resource Library is your one-stop shop for downloading any and all of the workbooks. You'll also find module "Objectives" and "Overviews" there too. Typically, the workbooks usually correlate with module "Action Items" and will help you in completing your upcoming travel prep. Some of Action Items and workbook pages may be required submissions by your institution. If so, you'll be given instructions with the Action Items. If they're not required, then just use the workbook pages that you find useful and that apply to your upcoming travel and needs. Regardless of HOW you prepare, we highly encourage you to find some system for researching, recording, and saving your travel prep information.

The PDF workbooks are fillable so you can use and reuse these templates to help with your travel prep. To retain the data you enter in these fillable PDFs, download the PDF to your cloud storage or hard drive, or print it out. For workbooks that have the "Upload Image" feature, you'll have to open that workbook in Adobe Acrobat for the feature to function correctly. All other features should work in any other PDF software. If you prefer text-only versions of the workbooks, you can download the Word Document by clicking the "Download Word" button instead of the PDF one.

Assessment

When you see the "Assessment" icon, it's time to either assess your own knowledge by completing "knowledge checks" required to progress in each module OR assess the Traveler Trainer PROgram itself by giving feedback to help make this training even better for future travelers.

In this sample from the Insurance module, students play along with Layla and her friends as they ask, "Would I Be Covered If . . . " After answering "yes" or "no" according to your university's policy (we customize this), they read the “Read the Rest of the Story" (also customizable for each university) to explain the details of out what happened to the characters and why or why not our insurance policy would cover that situation.
