What’s a middle-grade book that you wish you had written and why?I wish I had written the Dog Man series. They capture not only all the joy and fun of being a kid but also the joy and fun the adult is having writing and drawing the books. What inspired you to write this book?I was inspired by my own childhood. At nine years old, I immigrated and had to learn English. I remember how hard it was initially, trying to make new friends when you couldn’t communicate. How did you create the main character in this book?Jingwen first appeared to me with his brother, Yanghao, and they were secretly baking. I had a rough idea about what their personalities would be, and I had a lot of fun refining their characters to allow them to bounce off each other and for them to bring out the worst – and the best – in each other.Where did you write this book? At home? A coffee shop? The library?I like to do a lot of writing in my head, so most of it was done while I was walking my dogs. Other than that, it was mostly at home and a friend’s beautiful house that I happened to be house-sitting.What tips do you have for young writers?Remember to have fun, especially if you’re a writer with publication goals. What was the process like in getting this book published? It was exhilarating. I had written many stories that received so many rejections, and Pie in the Sky finally got me my agent and my first book deal.
