What was your favourite middle-grade book as a kid?Anything magical, but especially The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein. What inspired you to write this book?I was in Thailand visiting family when the cave rescue took place, and so I knew how emotional and impactful the story was. Once the boys and their coach were all rescued safely, I knew I wanted to write a book about this inspiring event and include as much about Thai culture and community as possible. It really did have such an impact on the mission.Where did you write this book? At home? A coffee shop? The library?I was on such a tight deadline for this book, and so I worked on it everywhere. My house, the school carpool line, on an aeroplane, on a train, in a doctor’s waiting room – any chance I got, I was writing! What tips do you have for young writers? Don’t worry too much about how good your writing is right now. It will get better with practice. Right now, your job is to gather stories and ideas. Talk to people and listen to their stories. Elders- like our grandparents – are particularly great sources. Watch and observe the world around you. Absorb all of these things. Better yet – keep a journal, because you will return to them again and again for inspiration all your life. How do you keep going when you get stuck/writing gets hard? Taking a walk outside and getting my blood pumping helps more than anything. I also like to listen to music or watch movies as a way to bust away the clogs in my brain. Sometimes I just need a jolt of some other kind of art to help get me unstuck.
