Purpose of Each Law

IDEA

Guarantees students with a disability receive a free and appropriate education through the special education system.

504's

Protects rights of people with handicaps, visible or not, in places that receive Federal financial assistance.

ADA

Protecion for every person with a disability from discrimination in school, the workplace and everyday life.

Who Qualifies?

Under IDEA

Children ages 3-21 with one or more of the 13 categories of disabilities.

Under 504's

Children & adults in school K-college with a physical or mental impairment.

Under ADA

Any person who has a physical or mental impairment.

Teachers should include movement breaks for students during class periods.

Teachers should ensure extended time is given for assignments and assessments.

Teachers should ensure preferential seating arrrangements are made.
