Elizabeth I, the Protestant, was Queen of England, but the English Catholics did not accept her. They wanted Mary because she was also Catholic.
HER FIRST HUSBAND
When Mary was 5 years old, she was sent to France to marry Francis II, the son of Henry II. They later became king and queen, but at 18, Mary returned to Scotland a widow.
LORD DARNLEY
In 1569, Lord Darnley, Mary's cousin, arrived in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. He was arrogant and ambitious, and the nobles detested him. But Mary was young and innocent; she fell in love with him, and they married. However, she soon discovered his dark side. He drank frequently and was often violent.
DAVID RIZZIO
Mary was pregnant and unhappy, so she asked her secretary, David Rizzio, for advice. The two became friends. Darnle got angry about this, so she stabbed David to death in front of her.
DUKE BOTHWELL
Eight months after the birth of her son James, servants found Darnley's dead body in his bedroom. People began to suspect that Mary's friend, the Duke of Bothwell, had killed him and that Mary had aided him, because three months later, they married. The nobles turned against Mary and imprisoned her in Lochleven Castle.
HER DEATH
Mary was imprisoned for 19 years. During this time, there were many conspiracies against Elizabeth, and Elizabeth believed Mary was involved, so she was put on trial. Her execution took place at Fotheringay Castle, and her small dog was hidden under her dress the entire time. After Elizabeth died, Mary's son, James VI of Scotland, also became King James I of England.
