Personal Dimension

Evaluate and correct your own major faults before criticizing the minor mistakes of others

What is the Personal Dimension?

The personal dimension refers to the beliefs, perspectives, desires, goals, and personality that make us who we are, unique. “We consequently respond or participate with the perceived experience through our actions (of the body), along with emotions which verify our identity within the situational context of the experience”( Personcenteredarts , 2018). Sometimes, these elements can lead us to deceive ourselves in order to avoid taking real action in a cause. In this manual we will specifically focus on climate change. How our identity and view can push us toward action or not.

UNMASKING DECEPTION AND HARMFUL ATTITUDES

Egocentric/Narcissist

Negligent

Example:

Example:

"We are going through a terrible situation. I believe that after what I just did, things will get better". Comment from someone on a post regarding water shortage in qro.

"I already know climate change is real, I learned about it in school" said someone as they left the tap running while brushing their teeth, drove one block to the store instead of walking and never connected their daily habits to the crisis they claim to know.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Become critically informed
Commit to achievable defined goals
Develop ecological empathy

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Develop ecological empathy

Practice imagining and actually realizing how your daily decisions affect ecosystems, vulnerable communities, and future generations. This transforms the personal dimension from passive to active, connecting abstract global problems to your immediate choices and your daily life.

Commit to achievable defined goals

Set specific personal targets like use the bike on sunny days to school, eliminate single use plastics at home. Vague intentions like "be greener" rarely or never lead to a behavioral change. “Structured goal setting is critical. A well formed goal is a pathway that helps you take those abstract ambitions and ideas, and shapes them into actionable, trackable, and achievable results.” (AIU, 2025). Additionally, sharing these goals with others creates social accountability, making them more likely to be achieved.

New APCO study affirms climate crisis is the world’s top concern—poor communication may be to blame. (2023). Ag Innodata Company. https://www.agilitypr.com/pr-news/pr-news-trends/new-apco-study-affirms-climate-crisis-is-worlds-top-concern-communication-may-be-to-blame-for-lack-of-action/

This is conscious ignorance that is shown through a lack of action: the person possesses enough knowledge to act differently but chooses consciously not to. The negligent person never bridges the gap between knowing and doing. This is one of the most common and dangerous attitudes because they have awareness while producing zero change. This can be identified as the value action gap. “There is also considerable evidence of a gap between value and action. Consumers are not actually buying green products they claim when polled. This discrepancy between verbal and actual commitment towards environmental behavior is thought to have attenuated the effectiveness of many environmental policies and measures” (Chauhan, 2020).

Slacktivism | KÜRE Encyclopedia. (2024). Kure. https://kureansiklopedi.com/en/detay/slacktivism-2192e

This is slacktivism: supporting a cause in a superficial, low effort way without taking any real or meaningful action. Referred to as “armchair activism, defined as a form of online activism that involves activities requiring little engagement, and minimal time and effort, usually without active mobilization to solve a social issue. (Żuchowska-Skiba, 2023). The person feels they've done something by posting, when in reality this sensation of contribution reduces the motivation to make real change. According to Kristofferson et al. (2013), These types of behaviors are referred to as token support because they allow consumers to affiliate with a cause in ways that show their support to themselves or others, with little associated effort or cost. We contrast token support with meaningful support, which we define as consumer contributions that require a significant cost, effort, or behavior change in ways that make tangible contributions to the cause. This behaviour decreases the likelihood of taking real follow up action.
