A Cautionary Tale
My dad's a referee.
It can make life very hard.
He can barely last five minutes
without reaching for a card.
He dishes them out at dinner.
He serves them up with tea.
He writes my name down in his book.
He does this regularly.
He finds a way to caution me
no matter the situation.
I dived on to the sofa once:
got a card for simulation.

He's a stickler for the rules. He's unbending, mean and stringent.
I'd like to let my hair grow long
but he'd book me for infringement.
I didn't eat my cabbage salad
and he waved a card at me –
for denying an obvious
coleslawing opportunity.
I get yellow cards every day,
they’re not easy to prevent.
And when I tell him it's not fair,
he books me for dissent.
At least he's never sent me off.
I must be grateful, I suppose.
And it seems to make him happy:
he whistles everywhere he goes.

I need to ‘look around’ the beginning of the poem for a clue about why life is hard with the narrator’s dad. I ‘find and take’ the answer “He can barely last five minutes without reaching for a card.” This shows the dad is always acting like a referee and telling the narrator off.
