Hagia Sophia, officially known as Ayasofya-i Kebîr Câmi-i Şerîfi, is a mosque in the Fatih district of Istanbul that was converted from a church. It was originally built as a patriarchal cathedral with a basilica plan by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I between 532 and 537.
After the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire in 1453, it was converted into a mosque by Mehmed II. In 1934, a decree issued by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk initiated restoration work, and in 1935, a decision of the Council of Ministers converted the building into a museum. Excavation and restoration projects were carried out, and it served as a museum from 1935 until 2020.
In 2020, it was reconverted into a mosque, and in 2024, the upper gallery level of the building began operating as a museum.
