Dear diary, Melbourne, September 3rd 1854
When we arrived, we had to live in a small tent near the goldfields. My husband dug for gold every day, but he often found nothing. To survive, I had to cook meals, wash clothes, and sell bread to miners. Sometimes I also helped my husband dig for gold. Life in the colony was hard and exhausting. I couldn’t rest very often and I couldn ’t visit my family in Ireland again.
Many people were poor , hungry, and disappointed. However , women became strong and independent because they worked hard to help their families. Even if my life was difficult, I kept hope for the future. I dreamed of having a real house and a better life for my children in Australia. I will never lose hope.
Until next time, dear diary.
I am Mary Collins and I am going to tell you my story. I was a young woman from Ireland. I was brought to Australia with my husband because work was offered to poor families in the colonies. The journey by ship was long, difficult, and frightening.
