Working at a nonprofit in Barcelona has shaped my professional development in ways directly relevant to a mission-driven career. Internship Reflection
When I started this internship two months ago, I didn't really know what to expect. I knew I'd be working with a nonprofit, I knew it involved immigrant women, but I had no idea how much the experience would actually change me.
The women I met at ACESOP are some of the strongest people I've ever been around. Many of them came to Barcelona from Pakistan, leaving behind everything familiar, and they were rebuilding their lives in a completely new country, language, and culture. Watching them do that with so much grace taught me more about resilience than any class ever could. There were days they'd come in exhausted, dealing with paperwork, homesickness, or just the weight of starting over, and they'd still show up, still show up for each other, still laugh. I don't think I fully understood what strength looked like until I saw it in them.
What meant the most to me was that this wasn't a one-way relationship. I wasn't just observing — I got to actually help. I used what I know to sit with the women, listen to what they were struggling with, and bring some of my own ideas to the table on how the organization could better support and educate them. It felt good to not just be "the intern" but to feel like my input actually mattered, like I was contributing something real to how the nonprofit runs and how it reaches these women.
The events we attended — around immigration, vaccination access, and cultural exchange — pushed me out of my own bubble in ways I didn't expect. I walked into some of them thinking I already understood the issues, and walked out realizing how much I didn't know. Sitting in those rooms, hearing directly from people navigating these systems, taught me things about cultural differences and communication that felt way more real than anything from a textbook.
Two months isn't a long time, but this internship gave me a completely different lens on resilience, community, and what it actually means to help someone. I came in wanting to gain experience. I'm leaving with a lot more — relationships, perspective, and a better sense of the kind of work I want to keep doing.
