CATANIA SICILIA

introduction

Today I am going to talk about my Erasmus experience in Catania, where I completed my internship at Centro Medico Catanese. This experience allowed me to discover a different working environment, improve my communication skills and learn how administrative tasks are organized in a medical center.

ABOUT CATANIA

  • Catania is a city located in Sicily, in the south of Italy.
  • It is famous for its culture, history and the Etna volcano.
  • The city has many tourists and international students.
  • Italian is the official language.
  • Catania has an active commercial and healthcare sector.

The Medical Center

Centro Medico Catanese is a private medical center that provides healthcare services to patients in Catania. The environment was professional but also very human. It was not just about medical procedures, but also about dealing with people, emotions, and daily situations that required attention and patience. The administrative part was essential for the center to function properly, especially reception, appointment management, and patient communication.

MY TASKS

My main role was in reception, supporting daily administrative operations. I welcomed patients when they arrived, checked appointments, confirmed bookings by phone, and helped with basic invoicing tasks when needed. Sometimes I also had to manage unexpected situations, such as last-minute changes in appointments or misunderstandings with schedules. Even though the tasks were not complex, they required attention, patience, and good communication.

WORK TEAM AND ENVIRONMENT

One of the most important parts of my experience was the people I worked with. I worked closely with two colleagues at reception, Pinuccia and Agatha. They were always patient, kind, and willing to explain things to me, even when I made mistakes or didn’t fully understand something at first. The manager of the center was Giancarlo, who was responsible for organizing the general workflow. He maintained a professional environment but was also approachable and respectful with everyone. There were also several doctors working in the center, each focused on different areas of medicine. Even though I didn’t interact deeply with all of them, I could see how coordinated the work between medical and administrative staff had to be. Overall, the atmosphere was very positive. People treated each other with respect, and that same respect was also shown to the patients.

CULTURAL AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

Living in Catania was not only about work, but also about people, experiences, and personal growth. I had the chance to meet many people during my stay. Moving abroad alone is a unique experience. It is beautiful in many moments, but it can also feel difficult at times, especially at the beginning when everything is new and unfamiliar. Even so, you quickly meet incredible people who make you feel welcome almost immediately. In my case, I also met other students from Spain, which made the experience easier and helped me feel more at home. Being away from home pushed me to become more independent and responsible. I had to manage my daily life on my own, adapt to new situations, and solve small problems without depending on others. At the same time, I feel I became more mature and more open as a person. I also became more extroverted, because I had to communicate with new people every day, in a different language and environment.
