India had become a colony of the British Empire in 1858, which led to a situation of extreme poverty

Gandhi promoted a NON-VIOLENT response that allowed the country to obtain independence in 1947. Through the application of AHIMSA (the refusal to hurt others) and SATYAGRAHA (‘the power of truth’ and passive resistance), Gandhi led the Salt March (1930), encouraged economic independence and undertook numerous hunger strikes. Each of these acts of boycott and non-cooperation helped to transform the concept of power and to liberate India.

In 2007, the Taliban took control of Swat, in north-western Pakistan, installing a totalitarian and extremist theocracy which (among other things) forbade girls to go to school.

Malala decided to refuse to be silenced: she began writing to denounce the situation and claim her right to an education. On 9 October 2012, a man intentionally shot her in the head. Malala survived and in 2014 won the Nobel Peace Prize: culture and education are the most powerful tools against extremism and oppression.

From 1922, Italy was under the control of Benito Mussolini, who, through the ‘Leggi Fascistissime’, imposed a totalitarian regime on the country, leading to years of poverty, terror and absolute control over the population.

The start of the Second World War, which saw Italy allied with Hitler's Germany, and the signing of the Armistice in 1943, led to the formation of partisan groups: men and women who decided to resist submission and liberate the country through acts of guerrilla fighting, sabotage, and acts of rebellion (such as the printing of newspapers and the organisation of strikes). The political representatives of the Resistance met to draft the Constitution of the Italian Republic.

The story of Hercules

Hercules, the demigod son of Zeus, was forced to serve King Eurystheus and complete twelve legendary labors to atone for a terrible deed caused by Hera's hatred. These impossible feats included defeating mythical monsters (like the Nemean Lion and the Lernaean Hydra), cleaning the Augean Stables, stealing sacred artifacts, and ultimately capturing Cerberus from the Underworld.

After winning his freedom, he married Deianira, but his earthly life ended tragically due to the centaur Nessus. Mortally wounded by the hero, Nessus tricked Deianira into giving Hercules a tunic dipped in poisoned blood, passing it off as a love charm. To escape the unbearable pain, Hercules threw himself onto a funeral pyre. Moved by his death, Zeus brought him to Olympus, where he reconciled with Hera and achieved immortality.

Ovid's Metamorphoses

In Book IX of Metamorphoses, Ovid portrays Hercules not just as a traditional muscular hero, but as a figure bridging the human and the divine through suffering and transformation. The narrative focuses on his final days, beginning with his victorious battle against the river-god Achelous for Deianira's hand. The true transformation occurs on the funeral pyre; as Jupiter declares that only Hercules' mortal half will burn, the flames destroy his human limbs while his divine essence remains untouched. Ultimately, Ovid presents this metamorphosis not as a punishment, but as the ultimate reward for his labors, turning physical pain into a necessary passage to eternal glory on Olympus.

Why Antigone is an heroine?

Antigone is defined by her unwavering determination, moral resistance, and deep religious and filial piety. Driven by individual consciousness rather than political ambition, she rigidly obeys the "unwritten laws" of the gods over formal state legality, refusing any compromise even when faced with death. When confronted by Creon, she proudly claims her actions without excuse, fully accepting the consequences. Ultimately, her choice to embrace martyrdom rather than betray her values transforms her into a universal symbol of the struggle against oppression and tyranny.

The burial

The funeral rite in ancient Greece was of great importance. Burying the dead was one of the supreme duties of the living who respected the laws of the gods. It was essential that man's body not be left to be fed to dogs and birds of prey, otherwise his psyche – the invisible part that accompanied him throughout his life and that came out of his mouth the moment he breathed his last – could not have reached Hades, the realm of shadows; she would then be forced to wander without a pose and become an evil and terrible specter for men. Failure to bury was therefore one of the worst penalties that could be inflicted on a man.

The story of Antigone

Following a bitter dispute for the throne of Thebes, Oedipus's sons, Eteocles and Polynices, kill each other in battle. The new king, Creon, grants Eteocles a proper burial but labels Polynices a traitor, forbidding anyone from burying his body. Driven by familial duty, their sister Antigone defies the decree and performs the burial rites alone. Despite the pleas of her fiancé Haemon, who is also Creon's son, Creon condemns Antigone to be sealed alive in a cave, while sparing her hesitant sister, Ismene.

Soon after, the blind prophet Tiresias warns Creon that the gods are furious and will punish him with the death of his own son. Panicked, Creon rushes to bury Polynices and free Antigone, but he arrives too late: Antigone has already hanged herself. In despair, Haemon attempts to kill his father, fails, and turns the sword upon himself. Upon learning of her son's suicide, Creon’s wife, Eurydice, also takes her own life, leaving the broken king entirely alone to face his ruin.

Through symbolic acts and silence, arms and words, they fought against oppressive regimes and won freedom. These figures lived and acted over the course of the last century in different parts of the world, each under an unjust totalitarian regime, each refusing to give up their freedom. Although they adopted different approaches, they are all considered heroes. They fought for us, and the present we know today is the result of their choices: of their decision to swim against the tide in the hope of a better future and in the desire to change their present.
