- Responsible for obtaining the energy needed by the cell through cellular respiration. It uses oxygen and glucose, and energy (ATP) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are released.

- Here, the substances are packaged for delivery around the cell or out of the cell.

- Responsible for producing, storing, and transporting proteins and lipids.
Characteristics
- The rough ER has ribosomes attached to its surface. Ribosomes create proteins.
- The smooth ER (pink) has no ribosomes.

Plant cells are eukyrotic cells (cells with a clearly defined nucleus). Plants are producers/autotrophs. Photosynthesis takes place in plant cells, and creates food for the cell and other living things that eat plants, consumers/heterotrophs. To start, click on the VACUOLE.

Function
- Stores materials needed for photosynthesis, and cell waste
Characteristics
- It can occupy 90% of the cell volume in a plant cell
- Animal cells have several small vacuoles

Chloroplasts
Function
- They are the organelles responsible for the production of food.
- They contain chlorophyll, which is responsible for absorbing light for photosynthesis.
- Photosynthesis uses light energy, carbond dioxide, and water to make glucose and oxygen.

Function
- A rigid structure which protects the cells and gives them their shape.
Characteristics
- It is located on the outside of the plasma membrane.
- Made of cellulose

What is Photosynthesis? It is a process in which plants absorb sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce oxygen and glucose. It occurs in the chloroplast located in the leaves. What is the role of photosynthesis in a food chain?
To produce glucose that will be the food for all living things.
How is photosynthesis connected to life in ecosystems on Earth? Photosynthesis produces glucose that is the energy of all organisms and also produces oxygen that living things breathe.

Consumers/Heterotrophs consume other organisms and do cellular respriation for energy. (Animals and Most Protists) Producers/Autotrophs use photosynthesis to make food and break it down with cellular respiration to get energy. Decomposers absorb matter from dead organisms to get energy. Scavengers are consumers that consume dead organisms. Remeber: The sun light is the initial source of light energy and is convered by producers into STORED chemical energy (glucose) and broken down into usable chemical energy by living things (ATP).
