Kyoto
Day 7
Tokugawa Ieyasu united Japan under shogunate after the warring states period in 1603, and built the Nijǒ Castle to showcase the shogun's supreme power over the Emperor of Japan.
Nijǒ Castle has been recently opened to the public after being in restoration for 17 years.
Students will embark on a tour of Kyoto, visit the Golden Pavilion, Nijǒ Castle and tour the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest.
Religions in Japan
Travelers will travel via the coastal city of Kamakura to Hakune and visit the Greta Buddha of Kamakura; they will see the Hachimangu shrine. On the second day, students will visit the Hakone Open Air Museum, ride the Mount Komagate cable car, see Odaware Castle and ride the bullet train to Kyoto.
Days 5-6

Osaka
Day 9
Students will depart back to Austin from Osaka.
Nara
Day 8
At their final destination, students will walk Nara with an expert local guide on their way to Osaka.
In Nara, wild sika deer are highly revered as messengers of the gods. There are 1,400 wild deer living in the Nara Park protected area and around the city.
In Tokyo, students will visit Ueno Park and the National Museum of Tokyo. On their last day, students will visit the Meiji Shinto Shrine, the Asakusa Kannon Temple, Akihabarar Electric Town and finish up with the Harajuku shopping district.
