WHAT IS COACHELLA ?
- Annual music festival in Indio (California since 1999)
- Two week ends in april,at the Empire Polo Club, with 10 stages and around 50 performers per day
- Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, and Karol G the first Latina to ever headline Coachella
- General Admission tickets cost up to $649, VIP nearly $1,400
HOW THE MEDIA COVERED IT ?
In weekend one alone, Coachella earned $870 million in media impact value (The Cougar) It became a live, multi-platform media event across Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube and Pinterest (ALM Corp) Coverage focused mostly on celebrities, influencers, and brand partnerships
Exemples of bias
Positive/glamour bias (mainstream media & influencers):Content was carefully curated to show only the best parts of the experience ;the glamorous side, mostly by influencers sent by brands or paid for their accommodations (The Cougar) Negative bias (critical media): Over 200 people were arrested over the two weekends ;for drug possession, public intoxication, and fake IDs ; but this got very little attention compared to the celebrity coverage (KTLA 5 News) Cultural/identity bias: Karol G made history as the first Latina to headline, and she herself said "it feels late" (Tcnjsignalnews) ; some media celebrated this, others barely mentioned it.
