The new york piublic library was designed by the archictects carrère and hastings and opened in 1911. It was funded by wealthy benefactors such as John jacob astor, james lenox, and especially samuel j. tildren, who left a lage part of his fortune to help create a major public library. On the outside, the building is made of white marble and has an elegant beaux-arts style. At the entrance, there are two famous stone lions named patience and fortitude, which have become symbols of the library, representing strength and patience. Inside, there large and beautiful rooms, including the famous main reading room with a high decorated ceiling and long wooden tables. the library also holds millions of books and historicaldocuments avaible to the public.
