Judea and Samaria Long before Jesus' time on Earth, key historical developments shaped the world of the first century. To better understand the context, it helps to know some background about the region. Jerusalem served as the capital of ancient Israel and the location of God's Temple. However, in 931 B.C., the kingdom divided into two separate nations. The southern kingdom kept Jerusalem as its capital and was called Judah. The northern kingdom retained the name Israel and established its own capital in Samaria. To prevent his citizens from traveling to Jerusalem for worship, the first king of the northern kingdom set up golden idols and established idolatry as the official religion. This story appears in 1 Kings 12.

The two kingdoms even fought a civil war. Eventually, God brought judgment on the northern kingdom for its persistent idol worship. In 722 B.C., the Assyrian Empire attacked Samaria, conquered it, and deported many of its leading citizens. The Assyrians used a highly effective strategy to control conquered territories: they scattered the exiled Israelites across their vast empire and forced those who stayed behind to intermarry with Assyrian settlers, who introduced various pagan beliefs. This deliberate mixing of populations effectively erased the distinct identity of the original northern Israelites. As a result, their descendants became known as Samaritans rather than Jews.

Judea and Samaria Long before Jesus' time on Earth, key historical developments shaped the world of the first century. To better understand the context, it helps to know some background about the region. Jerusalem served as the capital of ancient Israel and the location of God's Temple. The Assyrians used a highly effective strategy to control conquered territories: they scattered the exiled Israelites across their vast empire and forced those who stayed behind to intermarry with Assyrian settlers, who introduced various pagan beliefs. This deliberate mixing of populations effectively erased the distinct identity of the original northern Israelites. As a result, their descendants became known as Samaritans rather than Jews.
