What is Prehistory?

  • Prehistory is the time before written records.
  • Covers millions of years of human history.
  • We learn about prehistory through archaeology, the study of the past through objects left behind.

When Did Prehistory Begin?

Prehistory began around 3.4 million years ago.
Earth was much different then, with more volcanic activity.
Early humans shared the planet with giant animals like mammoths and saber-toothed cats.

Aspects of Prehistoric Life

  • Nomadic Lifestyle: People moved constantly, following animal herds and seasonal plant availability.
  • Shelter: While commonly associated with caves, many lived in portable tents, teepees, or huts made of animal hides and bones.
  • Food Acquisition: They were hunters and gatherers, targeting animals like woolly mammoths and bison and gathering nuts, fruits, and tubers.
  • Tools and Technology: They crafted tools from stone, bone, and wood to hunt, process meat, and make clothing.
  • Social Structure: Lived in small groups (kinship groups), where social bonds and sharing were vital for safety and care.
  • Daily Survival: Life was demanding, with high infant mortality and a reliance on group cooperation to survive predators.
  • Communication & Culture: Over time, they developed language, created art (like cave paintings), and buried their dead,
