Introduzione
La pittura paesaggistica, di paesaggio o paesaggismo, è un genere pittorico che ha come soggetto il paesaggio, perlopiù ambienti all'aperto, ritratti dal vero, o inventati, o idealmente ricostruiti.
Il paesaggio, come tema artistico, ha avuto un ruolo centrale nella storia dell’arte fin dall’antichità, evolvendosi in forme e interpretazioni diverse a seconda dei periodi storici e delle scuole artistiche. Molti dei più grandi maestri dell’arte occidentale hanno utilizzato il paesaggio per esplorare temi come la natura, l’emozione, il sublime e la riflessione sociale e politica.Ad essa, possiamo collegare l'Articolo 9 della Costituzione:
La Repubblica promuove lo sviluppo della cultura e la ricerca scientifica e tecnica [ cfr. artt. 33 , 34 ].
Tutela il paesaggio e il patrimonio storico e artistico della Nazione.
Tutela l'ambiente, la biodiversità e gli ecosistemi, anche nell'interesse delle generazioni future. La legge dello Stato disciplina i modi e le forme di tutela degli animali. (aggiunto nel 2022).
entrambi esprimono il valore culturale e identitario del territorio. La tutela del paesaggio non riguarda solo l’ambiente naturale, ma anche il modo in cui esso è stato osservato, interpretato e rappresentato dagli artisti nel corso della storia.
Come nasce laparola "paesaggio"?
La nascita del termine “paesaggio” in ambito artistico può essere fatta risalire simbolicamente al 1552, quando Tiziano Vecellio, in una lettera indirizzata a Filippo II d'Asburgo (allora ancora principe), utilizza per la prima volta questa parola con un significato propriamente pittorico. Il termine segna un’evoluzione rispetto al precedente “paese”, che indicava semplicemente un luogo reale: il “paesaggio”, invece, diventa una costruzione artistica, frutto di interpretazione e sensibilita', il che' fondamentale: la natura non è più solo uno sfondo funzionale alle scene religiose o narrative, ma acquisisce una propria autonomia espressiva. Il paesaggio inizia a essere idealizzato, organizzato secondo criteri estetici e caricato di significati simbolici, anticipando sviluppi che diventeranno centrali nei secoli successivi.Tra il 1550 e il 1554 Tiziano realizzò diversi ritratti ufficiali, come quelli in armatura, in cui la figura del principe emerge con forza psicologica e politica. Anche quando il paesaggio non è protagonista, l’atmosfera e lo spazio circostante contribuiscono a costruire un’immagine di potere, solenne e distaccata. Nel contesto spagnolo, proprio intorno al 1552, si diffonde il termine “paisaje”, segno della ricezione di questo nuovo modo di intendere la natura nell’arte. Ciò avviene in un periodo in cui Filippo II sta consolidando un modello culturale e religioso profondamente legato alla Controriforma, dove anche l’arte assume un ruolo ideologico.
Piero della Francesca
Nel Battesimo di Cristo, dipinto da Piero della Francesca, il paesaggio è costruito con un’attenzione quasi “scientifica” e svolge un ruolo essenziale nell’equilibrio dell’opera. Non è solo uno sfondo, ma uno spazio ordinato che riflette l’armonia divina. Il paesaggio è organizzato secondo una prospettiva rigorosa: lo sguardo si apre verso una vallata ampia, con un progressivo degradare delle colline. Piero utilizza la prospettiva aerea, cioè la progressiva perdita di nitidezza e saturazione dei colori verso l’orizzonte, creando profondità e distanza. Le forme sono semplificate e geometriche, coerenti con la sua ricerca matematica. Il fiume scorre verticalmente al centro della scena, quasi come un asse che collega terra e cielo. L’acqua è limpida, ferma, riflettente: non c’è movimento, ma una calma assoluta. Questo contribuisce a un senso di sospensione e sacralità. Anche se rappresenta il Giordano, ricorda i corsi d’acqua dell’Italia centrale, rendendo la scena più familiare. Sul fondo si intravedono colline morbide e una piccola città fortificata, costruita con forme essenziali e regolari. Gli edifici sono ridotti a volumi geometrici, quasi astratti. La città suggerisce la presenza umana, ma senza disturbare l’armonia naturale: tutto è silenzioso, immobile, eterno. Gli alberi sono pochi ma significativi. Quello accanto a Cristo è sottile, verticale, e richiama simbolicamente la vita e la rinascita. Le foglie sono descritte con precisione ma senza eccessivo dettaglio decorativo: prevale la chiarezza formale. La vegetazione è ordinata, mai selvaggia. La luce è diffusa, uniforme, senza ombre marcate. Non c’è una fonte luminosa evidente: sembra una luce “assoluta”, che illumina tutto allo stesso modo. I colori sono chiari, freddi, equilibrati: azzurri, verdi, ocra. Questa scelta elimina il dramma e crea una dimensione quasi fuori dal tempo. Le figure umane non dominano il paesaggio, ma si integrano perfettamente in esso. Non c’è contrasto tra natura e uomo: tutto è regolato da proporzioni armoniche. Il paesaggio partecipa al significato religioso, sottolineando l’ordine divino e la perfezione del creato.
Leonardo Da Vinci

La scena si apre dietro le figure della Vergine e dell’angelo su un vasto panorama. In primo piano si vede un giardino ordinato (hortus conclusus), simbolo della purezza di Maria. Oltre questo spazio chiuso, lo sguardo si perde in una profondità amplissima, che dà un forte senso di apertura e infinito.
Le montagne alte, frastagliate, quasi irreali, mostrano già l’interesse di Leonardo per la geologia. La vegetazione: studiata con precisione botanica, ogni pianta sembra osservata dal vero. Gli alberi distribuii con equilibrio, contribuiscono alla costruzione dello spazio.
La luce è naturale e graduale, non simbolica come nelle opere precedenti. Leonardo osserva come l’aria e la distanza modificano la percezione: nasce così lo “sfumato”, che unisce cielo, terra e acqua in un’unica atmosfera continua. Il paesaggio non è subordinato alla scena sacra: dialoga con essa. L’infinita profondità alle spalle di Maria suggerisce il mistero divino e l’apertura verso qualcosa di universale.
Giovanni Bellini
Nell’Orazione nell’orto di Giovanni Bellini, il paesaggio non è un semplice sfondo, ma una parte essenziale della scena, costruita con grande equilibrio e sensibilità naturalistica. La composizione si apre su un ampio scenario collinare, dove le forme della natura sono morbide e armoniose e guidano lo sguardo verso il fondo, creando una forte sensazione di profondità. La prospettiva è soprattutto atmosferica, con i colori che si fanno più chiari e azzurri man mano che ci si allontana, mentre le montagne si dissolvono nell’aria, dando un senso di spazio infinito. In primo piano il terreno è più aspro e roccioso, quasi a riflettere la tensione interiore del momento, ma subito oltre la natura diventa più dolce e ordinata, con alberi sottili e vegetazione equilibrata. La luce è diffusa e calda e unifica tutta la scena, creando un’atmosfera silenziosa e contemplativa. Il cielo occupa una parte importante della composizione e contribuisce a dare respiro e spiritualità al paesaggio, mentre sullo sfondo compare una piccola città perfettamente integrata nel contesto naturale, simbolo dell’armonia tra uomo e natura. Nel complesso, Bellini costruisce un paesaggio idealizzato e meditativo che trasforma la natura in spazio sacro e invita alla contemplazione interiore.
Giorgione di Castelfranco e riferimenti alla Tempesta
La Tempesta di Giorgione rappresenta una tappa fondamentale nella nascita del paesaggio moderno, non solo come genere pittorico autonomo, ma come espressione poetica e psicologica della realtà. In questa tela, la natura non è più un semplice sfondo funzionale alla narrazione, bensì una presenza viva, dominante, avvolgente: un vero e proprio protagonista che riflette – e in qualche modo genera – il mistero dell’esistenza umana. Il cielo minaccioso, attraversato da lampi improvvisi, costruisce una dimensione atmosferica carica di tensione, dove la luce si muove in modo inaspettato, senza una logica prospettica o simbolica definita. Tutto è sospeso, indefinito, come se il paesaggio fosse più un sentimento che un luogo.
Le figure in primo piano – il giovane armato e la donna con il bambino – non offrono un punto d’appoggio interpretativo sicuro; sembrano anch’esse parte del mistero, immerse in una dimensione dove il confine tra uomo e natura si dissolve. L’enigma non riguarda solo il significato iconografico, ma la stessa percezione del mondo: La Tempesta diventa così un poema visivo sull’incertezza e sulla potenza della natura, specchio dell’animo umano. La pittura di Giorgione introduce l’idea di paesaggio interiore, dove l’ambiente non descrive, ma suggerisce, evocando emozioni, silenzi e attese. È qui che si apre una nuova via nella storia dell’arte occidentale: il passaggio dalla rappresentazione oggettiva del mondo alla visione soggettiva e spirituale della natura.
Nel Seicento, questa intuizione si sviluppa in direzioni diverse ma profondamente connesse. In Caravaggio, con la Fuga in Egitto, la natura si fa concreta, tangibile: il paesaggio non è più simbolo né metafora, ma realtà drammatica e quotidiana. La luce taglia lo spazio con forza teatrale, scolpendo le figure e trasformando l’ambiente in un luogo di presenza e verità. L’elemento naturale, pur realistico, partecipa alla tensione spirituale della scena: la foresta, la riva del fiume, l’atmosfera silenziosa sono intrise del medesimo pathos che anima i personaggi. Il divino si manifesta così nella verità sensibile del mondo, nella materia.
Con Annibale Carracci, invece, il paesaggio ritrova un ordine classico e ideale. Nelle sue composizioni, come nella Fuga in Egitto della Galleria Doria Pamphilj, la natura assume un tono armonioso, misurato, costruito secondo proporzioni equilibrate e una prospettiva contemplativa. L’occhio dello spettatore è guidato con sapienza attraverso colline, alberi, corsi d’acqua e rovine, fino all’orizzonte luminoso, dove tutto sembra trovare una serena unità. In Carracci, il paesaggio non è più né mistero insondabile né realtà cruda, ma spazio poetico e razionale, in cui la bellezza della natura riflette l’ordine divino e la dignità dell’uomo.

Nell’Orazione nell’orto di Giovanni Bellini, il paesaggio non è un semplice sfondo, ma una parte essenziale della scena, costruita con grande equilibrio e sensibilità naturalistica. La composizione si apre su un ampio scenario collinare, dove le forme della natura sono morbide e armoniose e guidano lo sguardo verso il fondo, creando una forte sensazione di profondità. In questa tela, la natura non è più un semplice sfondo funzionale alla narrazione, bensì una presenza viva, dominante, avvolgente: un vero e proprio protagonista che riflette – e in qualche modo genera – il mistero dell’esistenza umana. Il cielo minaccioso, attraversato da lampi improvvisi, costruisce una dimensione atmosferica carica di tensione, dove la luce si muove in modo inaspettato, senza una logica prospettica o simbolica definita. Tutto è sospeso, indefinito, come se il paesaggio fosse più un sentimento che un luogo. Le figure in primo piano – il giovane armato e la donna con il bambino – non offrono un punto d’appoggio interpretativo sicuro; sembrano anch’esse parte del mistero, immerse in una dimensione dove il confine tra uomo e natura si dissolve. In Caravaggio, con la Fuga in Egitto, la natura si fa concreta, tangibile: il paesaggio non è più simbolo né metafora, ma realtà drammatica e quotidiana. La luce taglia lo spazio con forza teatrale, scolpendo le figure e trasformando l’ambiente in un luogo di presenza e verità. L’elemento naturale, pur realistico, partecipa alla tensione spirituale della scena: la foresta, la riva del fiume, l’atmosfera silenziosa sono intrise del medesimo pathos che anima i personaggi. Il divino si manifesta così nella verità sensibile del mondo, nella materia. Con Annibale Carracci, invece, il paesaggio ritrova un ordine classico e ideale. Nelle sue composizioni, come nella Fuga in Egitto della Galleria Doria Pamphilj, la natura assume un tono armonioso, misurato, costruito secondo proporzioni equilibrate e una prospettiva contemplativa. L’occhio dello spettatore è guidato con sapienza attraverso colline, alberi, corsi d’acqua e rovine, fino all’orizzonte luminoso, dove tutto sembra trovare una serena unità. In Carracci, il paesaggio non è più né mistero insondabile né realtà cruda, ma spazio poetico e razionale, in cui la bellezza della natura riflette l’ordine divino e la dignità dell’uomo.
