how

clue

became a play

British musician Anthony Pratt was inspired by early 20th century murder-mystery scenarios and parlor games in European country mansions.

To pass the long nights stuck indoors during air-raid blackouts in World War II, Pratt and his wife, Elva, recreated those murder-mystery parlor games in miniature, as a board game called Murder!

In 1947, Pratt patented the game and sold it to a U.K.-based game manufacturer named Waddington’s and its American counterpart, Parker Brothers.

Playwright Sandy Rustin, in partnership with Hasbro and the Araca Group, adapted the 1985 film and created the play Clue: On Stage. The play premiered at the Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania, in 2017, directed by Hunter Foster.

In 1985, Producer Debra Hill initiated the transformation of the now popular board game into a live-action murder mystery comedy film, before passing the directing to Jonathan Lynn.
