- World War II took place from 1939-1945
- Involved Over 30 Counties
- Over 60 Million People Died
That is the same amount of people as the Pittsburg Steelers stadium being sold out 880 times.
The war in Europe ends!
- By 1945, Germany was losing the war.
- Allied countries fought across Europe until they reached Germany.
- Germany finally surrendered, or gave up in May 1945.
- This day became known as: Victory in Europe Day (VE Day)
- People celebrated in the United States and Europe because the war in Europe was over. But, do you think the entire war was over?
The war in asia ends!
- Japan continued fighting in the Pacific Ocean and Asia.
- Battles where long, difficult, and very dangerous.
- The U.S. created a new powerful weapon called the atomic bomb.
- The bombs were dropped on two cities in Japan: Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
- This showed how powerful the weapon was and led Japan to surrender August 1945. This day became: Victory Over Japan Day (VJ Day).
