Thesis Statement

A small-scale combination of urban and rural labor defined the African American experience in Bexar County. The records show that although the community was small in comparison to other regions, it was essential for the economic growth of San Antonio.

Children of African descent made up 5.6% of 2,438 Baptisms.

In 1860, San Antonio’s population was 7.2% enslaved, compared to 28.5% in Houston and 47.4% in Galveston.

51% of slave owners were farmers and ranchers, and 30% were merchants and proffesionals.

42.9% of slaveowners in Bexar County owned only 1 slave.
