What do we call this little guy?

The most common name for this species are Red Pandas. The also could be called "firefox" or "red-cat bear". Their scientific name is Ailurus fulgens.

The Red Panda is apart of the Animalia kingdom. They are also apart of the Chordata phylum. There are mammals, so they are in the Mammalia class. They are in the Carnivora order, therefore they are carnivores. Red Pandas are in the Ailuridae family. Their genus is Ailurus. Their species name is Ailurus Fulgens.

Natural Habitat

Red Pandas naturally live in high places or high mountains. They live in temperate forests. They also live in bamboo forests. They are primarliy found in China and Nepal, but some can be found in India, Bhutan, and Tibet.

How they take care of themselves

They are more active during the cooler weather. They are especialy active during the winter mating season.

• Red Pandas mostly eat bamboo. 95% of Red Panda's diet is bamboo.
• They mostly eat the leaves of the bamboo trees. They eat what ever they can reach of the tree.
• In zoos, the recieve treats like apples, grapes, and bananas.

During cold weather they curl up into a ball to produce body heat. During warmer weather, they spread out on a branch to cool down.

Red pandas can become dormant if it gets too cold. They lower their metabolic rate and wake up every few hours for food.

Red Pandas are important to bamboo trees because they spread the bamboo seeds. They are targeted by snow leopards and other animals. They are what we call an indicator species. They are sensitive to ecosystem changes. Therefore, scientists can monitor them to indicate any habitat changes

Red Pandas have red-brown fur. Their faces are mostly red except for their white cheeks and snout. Their ears are also white. Their underbelly and legs are black. They have a striped fluffly tail.
