3d letter design project
Travel Poster Project
The goal of this project was to replicate a photo of a place you may have loved visiting or a place you'd love to visit using illistrator. I designed this poster for myself as i had gone to new york the previous year and it was one of my favorite trips ive ever taken, i used this project as a way to commemorate it. The design choices i made with this was i used a lot of layering, i have the front most buildings and then the buildings in the back for a kind of contrast and depth as well as a used an abundance of layering in the clouds putting each different shape and color together to make these beautiful clouds that complete the image. I think i did well will the thicker clouds like the at the very top. Although if i were to redo the project i would do the more airy clouds differently as i feel they contrast the other clouds too much instead of blending together like one piece of art, they feel out of place. I used the pen tool for every single detail and object in this project, this helped me to freehand things and get all the shapes exactly how i wanted.
Portrait Project
The goal of this project was to recreate a photo of somebody using different shapes. I made this for my girlfriend using a photo of her. I went with very small shapes layering them ontop of each other with different opacities and such in order to make it look as realisitic as possible. I think i did very well on the eyes and lips. If i were to redo it i would have paced myself better because i found myself doing less and less entricate work as i went because i was running out of time. I used the freehand pen tool so i could make absract shapes. I also used lots of layering to fit different pieces together perfectly, and opacity to create shadows and such.
Monster Project
The goal was to create a monster using different shapes. I designed it for me based off things i thought were cute. I used blue as a the body because thats my favorite color, and then i knew i wanted it to be super cute so i gave it really big eyes and a little snaggle tooth. I then gave it the gills/ears based off an axolotl and gave it the spots for a little extra detail. One thing i did well was the face, i think the face is perfect and is exactly what i was going for. If i were to redo it i would probably improve the body, more than likely attmpting another shape because although it looks good in the png if i were to try and alter it the body pieces dont alter well. I used different shape tools such as circle, regtangle, and line tool. I then altered these shapes using different effects.
New World Project
The goal of the project was to combine 6 different photos to create one new photo. I designed this using inspiration from Avatar. I put a lot of thought into this layout trying to make sure things made sense while also looking good, like the tractor and duck being on the grassy mountain, which is sitting in the background behind the coral. The sky that looks like its outsid the water but also fading into it, and the mushroom up front that fits in with the coral. One thing i did well was the blending of the sky and putting the mountain behind the coral. Although if i did it again i would try to make it look more natural by maybe adding depth and shading. I used the feathering tool, the copy and paste tool, the cutting tool, and the selection tool to piece the different images together.
Starwars Poster Project
The goal was to recreate a starwars poster. I used myself and designed it around me. I made sure to follow a color scheme to make it cohesive and representative of a real starwars movie poster. I also used a starwars font to enhance the idea that it is meant to be starwars. My photo is altered to match the look and feel of someone who may be in starwars. All of this pulls the poster together. One thing i did well was the background and the font. If i redesigned it i would make sure to blend myself in better so i dont stick out as much. I used lots of different techniques in tools such as smart edits and different filters, i used specialized fonts, clipping masks, and different adjustment layers.
3D Letter Project
The goal was to make a 3D letter using an animal or a pet. I made this for myself using a photo of my cat and the beginning letter of his name. I used the color red as the background to tie in the red in the J, i also used a photo of my cat laying in a similar shape to the letter J to make it cohesive. One thing i did well was making the letter 3D and figuring out how to fit in my cat. If i redid the project i would use a different background color. I used a clipping mask, a circle to make the shadow, and control j to create the 3D J.
Conclusion
This year I learned how to use design skills like color, typography, and layout to create better designs. At the beginning, I struggled with using layers, but I improved by breaking up my projects into pieces. I am most proud of my travel project which was also my illustrator final because it shows my growth as a designer. In the future, I want to improve my skills in photoshop and learn more about different ways to use photoshop to enhance photos. I am also interested in possibly pursuing graphic design as a career or hobby. Overall, this class helped me become more confident in my creativity and my ability to communicate ideas through design.
