“They will kill you if you go out there.”
“Because I am the ‘Vessel’,” Seth said, “They said I had the Enemy inside me. Who’s the Enemy?”
“The last god.”
“What happened to all the others?”
“They drowned the world,” said Ellie. “Only the Enemy tricked them and they ended up drowning too. The City is all that’s left. It was built on one of the highest mountains – the only parts that still stick above the sea.”
“So where is the Enemy?”
“Sometimes it’s floating around in the air. But eventually it chooses a Vessel. Then it lives inside the Vessel’s mind, growing stronger and stronger, until it gets so strong that it can burst out of the Vessel in its true physical form. It’s called ‘manifesting’.”
“What’s that like?” asked Seth.
“I’ve never seen it – the last time it happened was twenty-three years ago. But apparently the Enemy’s true form is terrifying – stronger than ten men and much, much faster. That’s why the Inquisitors try to find and kill the Vessel before the Enemy can manifest. But, if it does, the Inquisitors have to destroy it. The person who defeats it gets to become a saint when they die.”

“And what happens to the Enemy?” Ellie shrugged, “No one really knows. It goes away for a while. Sometimes many years. But it always comes back eventually.”
“But… how do I know I’m not the Vessel?”
“You’d know if you were. You’d be able to see the Enemy. That’s the Vessel’s ‘gift’.”
“Well then, I know what I have to do,” he said. “Find the real Vessel, and kill him.”
“What? No, that’s stupid.”
“Well, of course it wouldn’t make sense to you. You don’t have an entire city trying to kill you.” He headed for the door.
Seth was perched on top of a disfigured church organ that rose straight out of the sea, glaring at the sea beneath him.
The cathedral was silent save for the quiet lapping of the sea. That became a quiet rumble.
Then a much louder one.
From: Orphans of the Tide by Struan Murray © 2020. Licensed under CLA. Do not copy or share.
The sea began to bubble. Seth was staring at the sea with such intensity, his knuckles pale as they gripped the organ pipes. Tentatively, he raised one hand. The sea rippled, and began to rise – a column of water breaking from the surface. Ellie gasped – Seth was drawing the water towards him.
“What do you want?” Seth yelled suddenly. “Get out of my head!”
He was shaking with fury, a vein throbbing on his brow. The sea thrashed, then rose up in a huge wave, crashing down against the church organ.
“Did you see that?” said Anna. “He is the Vessel.”
But it had seemed to Ellie more like the sea had attacked Seth, like an unruly dog biting its master.
Seth was lying below the surface, unconscious. Something was crawling on his skin. For a moment, Ellie thought it was shadows from the dappling sunlight. Then she realised it was inside him – dark blue shapes swirling up and down his bare arms.

Reveal Explainer
The author explores the theme of fear by showing that the City is so afraid of the Vessel that they will kill anyone they believe is possessed. This is shown through Ellie’s warning, “They will kill you if you go out there,” which suggests fear is extreme and controls how people behave.
